Is Inspection Required for Registration in New Hampshire?

New Hampshire eliminated mandatory vehicle inspections for vehicles effective January 31, 2026. Vehicles registered on or after February 1, 2026, are no longer required to undergo safety inspections or emissions testing as a condition of registration and renewal. However, vehicle safety and equipment standards remain enforceable under state law during traffic stops and compliance checks.

Emissions testing is no longer required for vehicle registration or renewal. The on-board diagnostics (OBD) program, which previously applied to vehicles model year 1996 and newer, has been discontinued as part of the January 31, 2026, repeal. New Hampshire no longer requires emissions compliance testing as a condition of vehicle registration.
